Winter swimming is on the rise. People are searching for something a little bit more interesting than just the normal fitness regimes and winter swimming is one that is not only extreme but can also be really good for your health.
If you've never done it before then it can be tricky to find out where to start off. Here's our list of the top 5 places to try out winter swimming in the UK.
The Lake District - ChillSwim
The Lake District is arguably the most beautiful spot to try some winter swimming in the UK. Ullswater and Windermere are two favourites and if you want some guidance with your swims give ChillSwim a shout.
It's run by Colin Hill who founded the Great British Swims that are now massive - he is has done a lot of consulting on Ice Swims so he knows his stuff. Wierdly enough I actually used to swim with Colin when I was a teenager growing up in the Lake District!
London - Brockwell Lido
For the city dwellers down in the big smoke you might be better settling for an outdoor pool rather than any sort of docks or lakes. Brockwell Lido is a great choice. It opened in 1937 and has been going strong ever since.
It's more of a DIY approach and you are in the safety of a pool so its not as big of an operations as going open-water. You can find opening times and schedules on their website so you can plan your visit accordingly.
Bournemouth is obviously a good choice because of it being on the coast! It has some local winter swimming / open water swimming clubs you can join who have regular dips into the sea.
Bournemouth spartans are a winter swimming club who meet from Oct - Apr - so it might be worth getting in touch with those guys and girls for some help or to join in. Here's a link to their Facebook group if you fancy getting in touch.
